Much illness comes from the inner conflict caused when we say or do one thing but believe something entirely different. Most cancer patients are the “nice” people, the people who are always doing things for others, fitting in with others, living their lives according to other people's beliefs and expectations. What I've found is that it's much better to do what is right for me, to be my true self, and some people will love me and some will hate me, and that's okay.

Asking for what I want, and saying what I don't want (when I say “No” to you, it doesn't mean I don't care about you – it means I do care about me)

Taking responsibility for my situation and for my healing, rather than being a victim. Acknowledging that, however unwittingly, I've had some part to play in getting my cancer, means that I can also play a part in getting well. And understanding the difference between taking responsibility and blaming myself.

While a good diet is important in helping boost your immune system (your first line of defence against cancer), far more important that what goes down your throat, is what's happening between your ears.

A recent study of 3,500 cancer patients who had “beaten the odds” found four factors in common:
  • They took charge of their healing
  • They had a passion for life
  • They had a sense of purpose in their lives
  • They had a sense of belonging
